Daniel O'Connell's gun case and general's portrait in the frame

The leather gun case owned by Daniel O'Connell is one of the more unusual lots at Marshs sale in Cork next Saturday (December 9). The case, stamped with his name and Derrynane Abbey, is estimated at €1,000-€1,500. There is a similar estimate on a rare 19th-century watercolour, The Strand at Tivoli, Cork, by John E Bosanquet.

Antique furniture on offer includes a Georgian four-door breakfront bookcase, a four-piece ivory inlaid bedroom suite, a set of Cork dining chairs, a Georgian inlaid chest and a French walnut ormolu mounted vitrine. The online-only sale is at 11am next Saturday (December 9) and will be on view from Wednesday.

The sale at Woodwards in Cork today is headed by a five-piece silver tea service made by Egans in 1979 (€3,000-€5,000).

Among the top lots are an Edwardian longcase clock (€1,200-€2,000), a Georgian inlaid walnut chest on stand (€800-€1,600), a bottle of 1956 petit champagne cognac (€1,000-€1,500), a five-piece iron patio suite (€1,000-€1,500) and a Coalbrookdale style cast-iron garden bench (€750-€1,250). On offer is a selection of Persian rugs, furniture, collectibles and paintings including a James Butler Brenan portrait of General Nathaniel Hobart of the Madras division of the Indian medical service (€600-€800). The auction starts at 11am.
