A town hit by flash flooding during Storm Ellen has called for answers and action after it emerged that work to a culvert which could have eased the flooding was postponed hours earlier.

Power has already been restored to around 124,000 homes and businesses since this morning.

Cork County Council has released a statement addressing the flooding in Skibbereen following Storm Ellen. There was outrage in the town as the flooding last night came after the town's near €18m investment in flood defences.

Emergency ESB crews are working tirelessly to restore power to some tens of thousands of homes, farms and businesses in the most challenging conditions.

Hotel manager Louise O'Donovan says that the Eldon Hotel was destroyed by dirty, debris-filled water from the drains not being emptied properly.

The owner of a business badly damaged in County Tipperary says they are relieved no one was injured as Storm Ellen passed through the country. The roof was blown off the Regal Centre in Clonmel which houses O'Keeffe Furniture.

Cork City and County Fire Brigade has reported coming to the assistance of a woman in labour who was en route to hospital from Crosshaven overnight amid Storm Ellen.

Fianna Fáil TD Christopher O’Sullivan said the people of Skibbereen deserve answers as communities begin assessing the full extent of the storm damage.
