Three Cork islands aim to achieve 'complete energy independence' by 2030, under new initiative

Three islands off the coast of Cork are aiming to achieve complete energy independence by 2030, as part of a new initiative launched by the European Commission.
Bere island, Sherkin island and Cape Clear are among 30 island and island groups included in the “30 renewable islands for 2030” initiative.
The list features a variety of islands from across 10 different EU countries, ranging from the Canary Islands of Isla de Graciosa and La Palma in Spain to Madeira, Portugal.
A total of seven islands from across Ireland have been chosen under this initiative.
- Aran Islands;
- West Cork Islands (Sherkin and Bere Islands) and Inisbofin;
- Cape Clear Island;
- Arranmore and Tory Island.
The islands, chosen after careful consideration by the EU energy islands secretariat, will “pioneer sustainable practices” over the coming years.
Under this new initiative, the islands will decide on their plan to achieve a carbon-free energy system, while exchanging best practices with other islands involved.
Over the next three years, each island will benefit from comprehensive assistance, catered towards their specific energy transition needs and limitations, ensuring a smooth transition towards renewable energy-powered systems.
Commissioner for energy Kadri Simson said: "I am delighted to see the completion of the next step in this initiative. The islands selected now have the opportunity to serve as pioneering models for planning and delivering clean energy systems, and how to manage these decentralised decarbonised electricity systems.
“This will provide invaluable insight for other islands, many of which are still highly dependent on expensive, imported fossil fuels. They can also serve as examples for the transition in towns and regions across the world,” she said.
