Working Life: We’re at our most creative in the early part of the day

6.15am

We’re at our most creative in the early part of the day, so once I’ve had nothing less than the perfect coffee, I head into my home office and use this quiet time for deep thinking before the kids get up. We have 29 pharmacies and we’ve just launched GeneCheck, a genetic testing service, so there’s a lot to consider.

8am

Breakfast and school runs dominate for a period. Myself and my wife Rhona have two sons, Alex, 10, and Ethan, nine, and a baby daughter Zoe. Once the kids are sorted, I head back to the home office, where an hour is spent checking all of the pharmacies are open.

10am

I’m an Iron Man competitor and the training regimen involves a 90-minute morning session running/swimming/cycling. After that, I head into our office in Dublin city centre, swinging by Fuel Foods Café in Clontarf to pick up provisions.

Noon

I work through lunch, going through Calendly, an online scheduling platform I use to set up one-on-one chats with staff or meetings with external stakeholders. I also spend time making GeneCheck calls. GeneCheck uses ground-breaking technology to determine how individual patients might react to the drugs they are prescribed. Prescribing is more personalised and precise, helping to avoid side effects like weight gain, shortness of breath, nausea, and even hospitalisation.

2pm

I conduct GeneCheck consultations, sharing results with patients. The test uses a saliva sample and the turnaround time for results is about a month. One woman who took the test recently had been on anti-depressants for a long time. GeneCheck showed the daily dosage was too high and she was open to a potential heart issue.

5.30pm

After a busy afternoon dealing with all the high-level stuff running a business throws up, I head out on a second Iron Man training session. Once that’s done, it’s kid coaching time — soccer and rugby in Clontarf, where I live.

7pm

Cut off point for work. Downtime with family and seven-month-old Zoe. It’s a busy household, so I have to be disciplined about striking a work-life balance.
