Management at a Cork city centre store barred a man from the premises but he returned to the property and swung a punch in the direction of one of the staff.

Jonathan O’Leary of Cork Simon Community pleaded guilty to a charge of assault arising out of the incident.

It was pointed out that while the accused did swing a punch it never made contact.

Defence solicitor Eddie Burke said the 33-year-old wished to apologise for his behaviour. “He is originally from England and reared in Tralee. His father died around the time of this incident," Mr Burke said.

Sergeant John Kelleher said: “On Thursday, August 10, 2023, at approximately 6pm, John O’Leary entered Centra on Grand Parade.

“As he was barred from the store he was removed by a member of security.

“He made threats towards the member of staff and swung a punch in his direction. Mr O’Leary was first restrained. He then left the area continuing to make threats.”

He was charged with one count of assaulting the officer.

Sgt Kelleher said: “He swung a punch but it did not hit his target.”

Judge Mary Dorgan imposed a three-month sentence on the assault charge.
