Munster's RG Snyman out until March with injury

'He has got unfinished business with us. Probably not going to be able to see him until March,' Rowntree said.

RG Snyman’s ill fortune at Munster looks set to stretch well into next year and his final season at the club with head coach Graham Rowntree revealing that he doesn’t expect the World Cup winner to play again until March.

The giant lock helped the Springboks reclaim the Webb Ellis trophy in France last month but suffered a shoulder/chest injury that required surgery in his native South Africa on the side’s return home from France.

Snyman has suffered two long-term ACL injuries as well as burns in a firepit accident since arriving in Ireland in the summer of 2020 and that has restricted him to the sum total of ten appearances for the province.

The club announced on Monday that he would be moving on next summer for another playing opportunity and his time on the field with the men in red will be severely limited between now and then.

“He has been great around our group,” said Rowntree.

“He is in our leadership group. He has had his injury woes and been through some dark times. For him to be able to lift a trophy at the end of last season with all his mates was fantastic and I wish him all the best.

“He has got unfinished business with us. Probably not going to be able to see him until March. I’m planning for the worst-case scenario, that will be March, but he still has a big role to play for. He has a big job to do for us before he leaves.”

Snyman is back at the club’s high-performance centre in Limerick for rehab where he is joined right now by a number of his teammates as Munster look ahead to Friday night’s visit to Cork of URC leaders Glasgow Warriors.

There is positive news for Peter O’Mahony (shoulder) and Jack O’Donoghue (ankle) after they both sustained injuries two weekends ago against the Stormers. Both are unavailable this week but not a concern in the medium or long-term.

“They had another look at him last night,” said Rowntree of O’Mahony. “It’s not as bad as it was. It will be weeks. I’m hoping to get him involved in the European competition this side of Christmas. That’s all I can give you at the moment.”

The news is less positive for Jack Daly as he suffered an ankle injury at training last week and will undergo surgery this week.

Liam Coombes (shoulder), Joey Carbery (wrist), Patrick Campbell (ankle), Roman Salanoa (knee), Mike Haley (hip), Cian Hurley (ankle/Achilles), Niall Scannell (groin) are all continuing their rehab.

Oli Jager, who arrived from Christchurch late last week, has started training with his new teammates at UL and his availability or otherwise for the Glasgow game will be decided based on his progress in this first week.
