A man wearing a balaclava and carrying a large kitchen knife robbed €250 cash from the Unity shop at Lower Glanmire Road in Cork on Sunday afternoon and on Monday the person accused of carrying out the crime sought bail.

Garda Killian O’Connell objected to bail being granted to Bernard Horgan at Cork District Court. Garda O’Connell said the seriousness of the alleged crime was one of the grounds for the objection.

It is alleged that the Unity shop on Lower Glanmire Road, Cork, was robbed at 3.30pm on Sunday, November 26.

The allegation made by Garda O’Connell was that a raider wearing a balaclava arrived in the convenience store and produced a large kitchen knife, demanding that the cash register be opened.

“He grabbed notes only and made good his escape,” Garda O’Connell said. He added that the accused had a balaclava when arrested and that nearby there was a bag under a car, and a knife was found in the bag.

“It is my belief that he is a danger to himself and to the public at large. I am satisfied he would commit further serious offences and pose a serious threat to the public at large,” Garda O’Connell said.

Defence solicitor, Eddie Burke, said: "He is adamant that absolutely no threats were made to any shopkeeper."

Bernard Horgan, 36, of Cork Simon Community testified: “When I went into the shop, all I said was open the till.

I had the knife in my hand. I did not threaten him or anything.

Cross-examining the accused, Sergeant Gearóid Davis said: “You’ve admitted going into the shop wearing a balaclava, carrying a knife – what effect do you think that would have?” Mr Horgan said: “They are going to feel afraid, intimidated.”

Judge Mary Dorgan refused bail and remanded the accused in custody until December 4.
