NFL latest: Panthers sack Reich after dismal start to NFL campaign

The Carolina Panthers have sacked head coach Frank Reich after starting the season with one win in 11 games.

He is the third NFL head coach to be sacked in back-to-back seasons after Ray Rhodes by the Philadelphia Eagles and the Green Bay Packers in 1998 and 1999, and Chip Kelly by the Eagles and the San Francisco 49ers in 2015 and 2016.

Reich took the Indianapolis Colts to the play-offs in two of his first four years with the team but was dismissed after winning just three of their first nine games last season.

Reich, 61, was appointed in January and the Panthers traded up to select quarterback Bryce Young with the first overall pick of the NFL draft in April. But he and his offence have struggled this season, and Carolina currently have the NFL's worst record.

Reich is the second coach to be sacked this season, as Josh McDaniels left the Las Vegas Raiders after a 3-5 start.

Chris Tabor has taken over as Carolina's interim head coach, while senior assistant Jim Caldwell will be a special advisor to offensive coordinator Thomas Brown, who will take over play-calling duties.

Reich had handed them to Brown then took them back, and the team suffered another defeat on Sunday, losing 17-10 at the Tennessee Titans.

Meanwhile Lamar Jackson became the fastest quarterback to reach 5,000 rushing yards and the Baltimore Ravens forced four turnovers while recording a 20-10 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday night in California.

Zay Flowers caught a touchdown pass and also ran for one for Baltimore (9-3), which won for the sixth time in the past seven games. The Ravens possess the top record in the AFC heading into next week's bye.

Justin Herbert completed 29 of 44 passes for 217 yards with one touchdown and one interception for the Chargers (4-7), who lost their third straight game. Keenan Allen caught 14 passes for 106 yards and Gerald Everett had a scoring reception for Los Angeles.

Jackson was 18-of-32 passing for 177 yards with a touchdown, and rushed for 39 yards on 11 carries. He has 5,011 career rushing yards in 82 games.

The previous fastest quarterback to 5,000 was Michael Vick (104 games). Jackson's rushing yards are fourth most by a quarterback, trailing Vick (6,109), Cam Newton (5,628) and Russell Wilson (5,232).

Jalen Hurts rushed for a 12-yard touchdown in overtime to lift the Philadelphia Eagles to a thrilling 37-34 win against the visiting Buffalo Bills.

Hurts' final score capped off an incredible performance in which he passed for three touchdowns and rushed for two more. DeVonta Smith finished with seven catches for 106 yards and a touchdown for Philadelphia (10-1).

Josh Allen threw two touchdowns and rushed for two scores for Buffalo (6-6). Gabe Davis had six catches for 105 yards and a touchdown, but he miscommunicated with Allen on a potential game-winning score in overtime that gave the Eagles a chance to come back.

Tyler Bass hit a 40-yard field goal to put the Bills ahead 34-31 with 5:52 to go in overtime.

Hurts led the game-winning drive with his feet and his arm, as he did throughout the contest. He scrambled for 27 yards, including the 12-yard touchdown, and he found Smith for gains of 17 yards and 11 yards as the Buffalo defence struggled to keep pace.

Philadelphia seized a 28-24 lead with 11:07 remaining in the fourth quarter. Hurts scrambled left, set his feet and lofted a perfect pass to Olamide Zaccheaus in the back of the end zone for a 29-yard score. That was set up by James Bradberry's interception of Allen, returned to the Buffalo 24.

Buffalo responded with a score to go up 31-28 with 1:52 left. Allen fired a 7-yard touchdown pass to Davis, which put the pressure on Philadelphia to respond on a soggy field.

Eagles kicker Jake Elliott delivered, drilling a 59-yard field goal in a cold rain to even the score at 31-31 with 20 seconds to go. Elliott pumped his fist after he made the kick, which cleared the crossbar with several yards to spare.

The Eagles pulled within 17-14 with 7:13 left in the third quarter. Hurts rolled right and connected with A.J. Brown for a 3-yard touchdown.

Buffalo regained a double-digit lead on its next drive. Allen rushed right and dodged a defender for a 16-yard score.

Hurts fired his second passing touchdown to cut the Eagles' deficit to 24-21 with 13:37 left in the fourth quarter. He hit Smith for a leaping 15-yard catch in the end zone.

Meanwhile Matthew Stafford threw a season-high four touchdown passes and the visiting Los Angeles Rams won consecutive games for the first time this season with a 37-14 victory over the Arizona Cardinals at Glendale, Ariz.

Tyler Higbee caught two TD passes and Kyren Williams added two receiving TDs of his own after missing the past four games with an ankle injury. Royce Freeman added a rushing TD for the Rams (5-6), who earned their ninth consecutive victory at Arizona.

Russell Wilson threw for a touchdown and rushed for another to lift the host Denver Broncos to a 29-12 victory over the Cleveland Browns.

Wilson threw for just 134 yards but added 34 more on the ground. Samaje Perine rushed for 55 yards and a touchdown for the Broncos (6-5), who recorded their first five-game winning streak since the 2015 season.
