Spanish fashion retailer Mango returns to Cork's Patrick Street

Mango. New store on Cork's Patrick's Street replacing the former Quills premises.

The Mango fashion chain has opened its new store on Cork's Patrick's Street returning to the city centre following its departure five years ago.

The Spanish retailer has opened a 360 square metre premises next to The Savoy. The unit had been vacant since Quills shut up shop in 2014. It was bought the following year for €2m by Clarendon Properties, owners of the Savoy. Mango has taken a 10-year lease, with a five-year breakout clause, which includes a penalty for early exit.

Mango had previously operated on Patrick's Street between 2004 and 2008. "Our arrival for the first time with our own company store in Cork will consolidate our brand and help us strengthen it internationally," says Daniel Lopez, Mango’s Franchise and Expansion Director.

Mango has been present in Ireland since 1998. At the close of 2022, the company had 16 stores in the country.

THe new Cork store is a further positive development for Patrick's Street which has struggled to return to pre-covid levels of activity. Last week, planning permission was granted to Penneys for the redevelopment of its flagship premises across the street from Mango. In May, the iconic Debenhams store was sold to Irish sport retail chain Intersport/Elverys for €12m, substantially lower than the asking price of €20m. Elverys are expected to move in early during 2024.

Fashion brand Flannels (owned by the Fraser Group) opened its new store in September, taking over from stationer/bookseller Easons, who relocated to the ground floor of the former Victoria Hotel.

Further down the street, the former Oasis premises was taken over by Carrolls Irish Gifts, while doughnut purveyor Krispy Kreme moved into the former nearby Porters store.

Other new faces on the street include outdoor wear specialists North Face and British shoe retailer Dune.
