Presentation Secondary School Milltown secured their first-ever win in the TUS Corn Uí Mhuirí at the 4G in Banteer on Wednesday.
In their second year in the competition, they will have to wait and see how other results will pan out ahead of their final group game against St Francis College, Rochestown.
De La Salle College, meanwhile, bow out after suffering narrow two, three and four-point reversals in all three of their games.
The sides were deadlocked at half-time, 1-5 to 0-8, but a brace of goals within a four-minute spell midway through the second-half, turned the game in the Kerry school’s favour.
Their big guns stood up, with Darragh Clifford slotting a penalty after Evan McCarthy was fouled on 39 minutes, and this was followed by a green flag from play by McCarthy - the groundwork done by James Clifford.
Gearóid Evans made some crucial plays as well, and Tadgh Gosney was a constant threat as they led 2-12 to 1-8, entering the fourth quarter.
They weren’t assured of victory though until the final whistle, as never-say-die De La Salle (forced to line out minus four of their regulars), made them sweat to the very end.
The Macroom side needed a goal to stay in contention, and Jack Sweeney obliged in the 43rd minute. However, the closest they could get after that was three points.
The Cork side got off to a great start with full-forward Oisin O’Sullivan bagging 1-1 in the opening six minutes. They did most of the early running and moved 1-4 to 0-3 in front after 20 minutes.
Crucially Milltown stayed in the game, and what was evident was the brilliant save De La Salle goalkeeper Stiofan McSweeney was required to make from Michael Byrne, and later in the half the woodwork denied Darragh Clifford.
The Milltown influence continued to grow approaching half-time when they reeled off five unanswered points, and all from play, to take the lead a minute from the interval.
Pivotal to this flurry of scores was a brace from Gosney, and one each from Byrne, McCarthy and Darragh Clifford.
Denis O’Mullane struck the final point of the half for De La Salle, to tie the teams on the scoreboard.
