The Samsung S90C, a 4K native TV, boasts a distinctive Quantum Dot Organic Light Emitting Diode (QD-OLED) display. Whether you're into movies, sports, or gaming, the S90C delivers superior image quality with exceptional performance.

Aesthetics and Design

I received the 65-inch version of the S90C from Samsung for a month for this review, but it also comes in 55 and 77-inch variants. It features ultra-thin bezels, providing an expansive and immersive viewing experience. The sleek OLED design further accentuates the visual appeal, making the S90C a statement piece in any living space. In particular, I love the tool-less feet, which make it quick and easy to place on a small table or large TV stand. Whether mounted on the provided stand or the wall, the TV's thin profile adds a touch of sophistication to its overall design.

Image Quality

The heart of the S90C lies in its groundbreaking QD-OLED display technology. This approach maintains the exceptional contrast and colour accuracy typical of OLED and enhances brightness, similar to the capabilities of mini LED displays. More traditional OLED models don’t get as bright and are not great in brightly lit rooms.

The S90C has an anti-glare coating that reduces glare, making it ideal for upgrading a TV in a room with direct sunlight.

This unique fusion of OLED and quantum dot technology results in an unparalleled visual experience. The S90C delivers the crispness and vibrancy associated with OLED while introducing a heightened brightness level previously unseen in this category. Although lacking Dolby Vision, the TV compensates with High Dynamic Range (HDR) 10+.

Tizen 7.0 Operating System

The S90C has the latest Tizen 7.0 operating system a seamless and intuitive user interface. The UI layout looks slick but feels smooth and responsive to user interactions. Tasks such as typing passwords and switching between inputs are notably smooth, underscoring the impact of premium processing power on the user experience.

Ports

The S90C features four HDMI 2.1 ports, ensuring users can seamlessly connect various devices, from gaming consoles to soundbars, with consistent performance across all ports. Gone is the OneConnect box; instead, all the ports are around the back of the TV. While I appreciate the convenience of the external cable, I prefer to have all my ports on the back.

This focus on connectivity reflects users' changing needs, acknowledging the various devices now essential components of the contemporary entertainment system.

Solar QLED Remote

The S90C uses the Solar QLED remote, which draws power from ambient light through a solar cell and eliminates the need for traditional batteries. The TV also has a standard remote with two standard AAA batteries.

Gaming

The S90C is excellent for gaming enthusiasts because it supports a 4K resolution at an impressive 120Hz refresh rate. This feature ensures a smooth and immersive gaming experience, making it an ideal choice for console and PC gamers.

Paired with Samsung's Game Hub, the TV offers a built-in gaming system, providing access to cloud-streamed games. This includes Microsoft GamePass, which works well, but you will have to pair a controller, and it’s only good for casual games and not competitive games.

Additionally, there’s a Motion Xcelerator Turbo Pro 4K 144Hz TV motion for PC gaming monitor-like performance.

Sound

While the built-in speakers sound decent for such a thin TV, I’d still recommend a soundbar or external speakers. Given the inherent audio limitations in ultra-thin TVs, even Samsung would encourage users to pair the S90C with a Samsung QLED soundbar. This ensures an optimal audio experience, compensating for the TV's focus on slim design and visual excellence.

Verdict

The Samsung S90C QD-OLED TV is a cinematic marvel that blends cutting-edge technology with user-centric features. Its QD-OLED display, Tizen 7.0 operating system, and emphasis on connectivity make it a top choice for gamers and movie enthusiasts.
