Weekend Irish preview: Dee Capo can successfully step up in grade for Gordon Elliott at Navan

PROMISING TALENT: Dee Capo cruises to victory at Cork earlier this month. He can build on that success at Navan on Saturday.  Picture: Healy Racing

The National Hunt season takes another step forward with two terrific cards this weekend in Navan. The nap on Saturday’s card goes to Dee Capo, who can follow up his recent maiden hurdle success by taking the Grade Three Bar One Racing For Auction Novice Hurdle.

Gordon Elliott’s promising sort has some wayward tendencies but looked better than ever when winning in Cork. It wasn’t the strongest race, but he was in a different league and, while it was less than a fortnight ago, he didn’t have a particularly hard race. This is a step up in grade but not a significant one for the four-year-old and he is preferred to She’s A Fine Wine.

The latter justified heavy support on her first start for Henry de Bromhead and is a fine prospect. She looks as though she will develop into a fine chaser in time but there is more to be achieved over hurdles and she can chase home Dee Capo.

Elliott’s Zanahiyr can take the Grade Two Railway Bar Lismullen Hurdle. He returned with cuts when disappointing in this race last year but returns in fine form, having already won at Punchestown. In receipt of weight from last season’s first two, Home By The Lee and Bob Olinger, he can reverse the form. Bob Olinger is considerably better off with the winner and can be the one to give Zanahiyr most to think about.

The Hotel Park St. Johann In Tirol Austria Handicap Hurdle is fiercely competitive and while there are cases to be made for the likes of Deons Diamond, Crassus, Clarens, Kudasheva, perhaps the most compelling one can be made for Fortunedefortunata.

Winner of a novice hurdle on his track debut, when trained by David Bridgwater, he made a winning start for current connections in October 2022, when taking a handicap hurdle off a mark of 109.

He hasn’t yet managed to win again but ran a couple of fine races in defeat and made a promising start to the new season when ninth in a handicap hurdle at Punchestown. That was at a time when the stable’s runners were badly in need of their outings, and he is bound to be much better for it. His mark of 119 looks well within his capabilities and he has strong claims.

Deons Diamond is a promising four-year-old and worth considering back over hurdles, having won a beginners’ chase on her most recent outing.

Ask Anything can follow up his recent Limerick victory when he contests the Lisadell Equine Hospital Handicap Hurdle.

A point-to-point winner who was well beaten but showed promise in three decent bumpers last season, he was sent off an odds-on shot to make a winning start over hurdles. He had little trouble justifying those odds and while it wasn’t the strongest of races, his initial handicap mark of 109 looks potentially very lenient based on his bumper form. He is preferred to Mighty Jeremy and Harvard Guy.

On what could be a tremendous weekend for local trainer Gordon Elliott, Croke Park can take the Grade Three John Lynch Carpets & Flooring Monksfield Novice Hurdle, the fourth race on Sunday’s card.

A £400,000 purchase following his win in a Dromahane point-to-point, he was well beaten on his bumper debut but made a winning start over hurdles when coasting to victory recently at Clonmel.

He jumped and travelled well that day and gave the impression he would be much better when upped in trip. The extra half-mile of Sunday’s race will be a big help and the exciting sort can account for stablemate Search For Glory.

The feature is the Bar One Racing Troytown Handicap Chase and Elliott has 15 of the 22 declared runners. It’s a tough race, but Run Wild Fred is vastly experienced in such handicaps and has much in his favour this time. A recent run should have put him spot-on for this assignment, and he is preferred to Munster National winner Gevrey, Hollow Games, and the Colm Murphy-trained Macs Charm.
