Former Paddy Power head of strategy for marketing communications Lucinda Kelly wouldn’t call herself a gambler but she has been a risk taker by not once but twice setting up her own company.
In the latest episode of The ieBusiness Podcast, in association with PwC Ms Kelly talks to business journalist Cáit Caden about the lessons she learned from the demise of her first company Popertee, a company that helped businesses that wanted to set up pop-up shops, and how she is applying them to her new venture Be Like Water, which offers fertility support in the workplace.
Ms Kelly talked about how the pandemic was the final nail in the coffin for Popertee, a challenge she couldn’t have foreseen.
However, there are some things she can control while pursuing her new business.
“I firmly believe money is a lot more scarce than it was five or six years ago and I think we have to be really mindful of that,” she said.
“For me, this time round I adamantly want to be generating revenue earlier and not waiting,” she said.
During this candid conversation, Ms Kelly also spoke about how her own fertility journey influenced her decision to create a new company and navigating another company through an environment full of new challenges.
“I believe the next 18 months is going to get even more difficult. You can see what it’s like for scale ups trying to fundraise,” she said.
