The ieBusiness Podcast: 'Fashion industry is the second-biggest polluter behind the oil industry'

In the latest episode of The ieBusiness Podcast, Aoife McNamara talks to business journalist Cáit Caden.

Aoife McNamara worked in Paris during fashion week and was an intern with Marc Jacobs in the US, but instead of pursuing a career in one of the fashion capitals of the world, she chose her home county of Limerick ito set up her clothing business in 2019.

“I’ve worked for international brands all over the world and I really just wanted to make a change,” she says.

In the latest episode of The ieBusiness Podcast, in association with PwC, Ms McNamara talks to business journalist Cáit Caden about the process of setting up her business out of a hallmark cottage in Limerick, how it has changed, and why sustainability will remain at the company’s core.

“When I figured out that the fashion industry is the second-biggest polluter behind the oil industry in the world, I couldn’t comprehend why we are still producing fast fashion,” Ms McNamara says.

Ms McNamara recently secured a B Corp cert for her eponymous company, making her business the first Irish fashion brand to receive the globally-recognised sustainability accolade.

In this candid interview, she also speaks about how inflation has impacted consumer spending for luxury products, and her plans to scale further.

“Imagine a little cottage in Brooklyn or somewhere cool like that,” she says.
