Irish Examiner secures 16 nominations for Irish Journalism Awards 2023

The Irish Examiner has received a total of 16 nominations for this year's Irish Journalism Awards across a range of categories.

Irish Examiner Education Correspondent Jess Casey is among the nominees for the 2023 Campaigning Journalism prize for her work outlining how Drinkaware, an organisation with close ties to the alcohol industry, had been offering training to secondary school teachers on how to lead classroom lessons about alcohol.

For the Columnist of the Year (Broadsheet) award, the Irish Examiner secured two nominations.

Irish Examiner Special Correspondent Mick Clifford is among the nominees, with judges highlighting three of his columns which covered the excavation of the Tuam mother and baby home, the nursing homes charges scandal, and the inquest into the 1981 Stardust fire, respectively.

Séamas O’Reilly also secured a nomination for the same award, with judges highlighting his pieces about Michael Flatley's film, Blackbird, the coronation of Britain's King Charles, and his discovery of an AI-generated Amazon book summarising his own bestselling book, Did Ye Hear Mammy Died?

Irish Examiner Crime Correspondent Cormac O'Keeffe also secured a nomination in the Crime Journalist of the Year category. In selecting Cormac, the judges highlighted his July 2022 Special Report telling the story of how an eagle-eyed plain clothes detective helped bring a sex offender to justice, and Cormac's detailed report on the burning by far-right protestors of a migrant tent encampment in Dublin earlier this year.

Irish Examiner Political Editor Elaine Loughlin was nominated for Political Journalist of the year, as was Political Correspondent Ciara Phelan. Reporter Ann Murphy also got a nomination for News Reporter of the Year.

In the Features Journalist of the Year category, the Irish Examiner secured three nominations.

Clodagh Finn was shortlisted for both her Women Who Changed Ireland series, as well as her Special Report on a University College Cork professor and his quest to piece together his mother's family history.

Noel Baker was shortlisted for his features the complex case of Kay Barrett, titled: How a family’s pleas for help saw their beloved Kay sent to prison, and for his piece on Greg — a man with pronounced intellectual disabilities who sadly 'fell through the cracks' of the HSE's mental health services.

The Irish Examiner's final nominee in this category was Sorcha Crowley, who was shortlisted for features on the Irish Cave Rescue Organisation, and on the remarkable story of Jasper Kraus, who was killed at his home by a rooster in 2022. Jasper's life story was the basis of the Irish Examiner's three-part podcast series, Death by Rooster.

The Irish Examiner's front page of Tuesday, November 15, 2022, which paid tribute to Vicky Phelan, also scooped a nomination for Front Page of the Year. On the day in question, above a black and white photograph of the CervicalCheck campaigner was a headline which simply said: 'Thank you, Vicky.'

The Irish Examiner's 'Badge of Dishonour' headline from its March 29, 2023 edition also received a nomination for Headline of the Year. The headline appeared above a story covering a report into allegations of abuse within the Defence Forces.

In the Magazine of the Year category, the Irish Examiner's Weekend magazine also secured a nomination.

In the Sports Writer of the Year (Broadsheet) category, both Éamonn Fitzmaurice and Maurice Brosnan received nominations, while the Irish Examiner's final nominations was in the Young Journalist of the Year category, in which Irish Times Group graduate Conor Capplis was shortlisted for his work with the Irish Examiner and with the Irish Times.

The 2023 Irish Journalism Awards take place on Wednesday, November 15, in the Round Room at Dublin's Mansion House.
