Apple enhances AirPods Pro with hardware and software upgrades

Apple's latest AirPods Pro second-generation earbuds offer a blend of new features and improvements that elevate the audio experience for users. One of the biggest improvements is the move from lightning to a USB-C port on the charging case. It's a welcome addition, and while existing users don’t need to upgrade, there’s never been a better time to buy the most popular earbuds on the market.
One of the standout features is the introduction of Adaptive Audio mode. This mode takes the listening experience to the next level by combining the best of both worlds. You no longer need to switch between Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) and Transparency mode as the AirPods Pro adapts to the surroundings automatically. In noisy environments, ANC takes precedence, while in quieter settings, Transparency mode comes into play, ensuring a seamless and optimal listening experience.
Accessing this new listening mode on your iPhone is straightforward, offering multiple methods such as settings on the earbuds, the Control Centre, or the stem of your AirPods Pro for quick and convenient switching.
The AirPods Pro second generation introduces Conversation Awareness, streamlining interactions with people nearby. When you want to engage in quick conversations while listening to music or other media, you no longer need to pause or perform complicated manoeuvres. Start talking, and the AirPods Pro will lower the media volume while enhancing voices, reducing background noise, and facilitating seamless interactions.
I found the new feature worked well and as advertised during my testing. It does come in handy at times when you need to work hands-free. However, I turned it off, but I can see it being advantageous for others. The main reason is the delay and time it takes to switch between modes. I find it quicker and easier to take out the buds.
The slight tweak to the hardware also improves the overall sound quality. Whether listening to your favourite tunes or watching the latest blockbuster movie with Spatial audio, the new AirPods Pro deliver. I found them great for late nights when I didn’t want to use external speakers that would disturb others. They’re also my go-to headphones for short flights because the noise cancellation is so good, rivalling some of the best over-ear headphones.
Battery life is up to six hours of listening on a single charge with ANC on. Five minutes on the charger can deliver up to an hour of battery life. You get up to 30 hours of total listening time with ANC when you include the case.
Of course, apart from the new USB-C port on the charging case, you still get all the same great features, including Precision Finding so you can find the case, the speaker in the case can play sounds to help you find it, and a lanyard loop on the side of the case.
USB-C charging is now on AirPods Pro, allowing users to charge them directly from Mac, iPad, and the new iPhone 15 lineup. Thanks to the latter's reverse wired charging option, you can also charge your AirPods Pro with the same cable as your iPhone 15. The AirPods Pro's IP rating has also been improved to IP54 for enhanced dust resistance, making them suitable for rugged adventures.
The AirPods Pro second generation enhances the call experience with applications of banners and LED indicators that clearly show whether the microphone is on or off, allowing users to mute and unmute during calls easily. This feature is supported in FaceTime, WhatsApp, and other key conferencing apps, providing a hassle-free call experience.
Apple has improved automatic switching, making it faster and more reliable, particularly with iPhone, iPad, and Mac. This seamless device transition ensures you can catch up when moving between devices with your AirPods Pro.
